A major impediment in planning cancer preventive work or down staging of cancer in the country has been the shortage of appropriately trained human resource in medical, para-medical and technical disciplines. Medical education in the country focuses mainly on diagnosis and treatment protocols and preventive oncology is yet to find its roots in most places. There is a severe shortage of properly trained nurses and health workers in cancer care. Thus CFI endeavors to continuously enhance knowledge-base and develop human resource in cancer prevention by organizing Workshops, Seminars and Symposia on topics of contemporary interests.
CFI also proposes to initiate part-time / regular 1-2 Semester PG Diploma / Certificate courses to provide hands-on training to Medical doctors, Technologists, Health Workers, Nurses, Social Workers and other Health providers and Policy makers in cancer prevention.

Cervical Cancer Screening Workshops in Northeast India
Cervical cancer is perhaps the only cancer which if detected in the pre-cancerous stage and intervened properly, can be treated with success. But due to the lack of any major effort on public education and in absence of organized cervical screening programmes at the national level, the disease is generally detected at an advance stage in 70 - 95% cases in different centres, when curative treatment is not so successful. One of the major reasons, beside financial constraints, is the unavailability of trained manpower in the field of early detection and treatment of cervical cancer.
The main objective of these Workshops is to provide training in the Methods and Techniques of detecting early lesions of Cervical Cancer and its treatment to in-service clinicians drawn from District Hospitals and Medical Colleges in the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura, Darjeeling District, West Bengal. |

National Seminar on Economic and Social impact of Cancer in India
An assessment of economic burden of cancer that includes direct expenditure on detection, treatment, morbidity cost with productivity loss for employers, patients and their families are major issues to resolve for health care policy makers, health care managers, clinicians, employers and social scientists. Besides, the widening disparity between different socio-economic classes due to differing ability for access and uptake of available health care facilities in the country. The financial burden and socio-psychological effects on the family and society in general are other aspects of cancer that need to be addressed.
The Seminar chaired by Prof. Amartya Sen, Nobel Laureate and Professor at Harvard University, was attended by 30 invited speakers from all over the country, who discussed these critical issues that India needs to prioritize. The Seminar was held under the chairmanship of Prof. Amartya Sen, Nobel Laureate and Professor at Harvard University.

Seminar on Life-style & Environment related Cancers in India and their Prevention
The one-day Scientific Seminar highlighted the increasing incidence of life-style and environmentally disposed cancers in India and their possible causes. The speakers also suggested the measures needed for their prevention. The Seminar also with the adverse health effects of increasing air pollution in metropolitan towns, with particular reference to its role in elevating the incidence of pulmonary cancers. This was the first scientific meeting organized by CFI where Dr. K T Bhowmik, Safdarjung Hospital New Delhi; Dr. P.C. Gupta, TIFR, Mumbai, Dr. Qamar Rahman, ITRC, Lucknow; Dr.R.K. Bhattacharya, Kolkata, Dr. P.S. Basu of CNCI, and Dr. Manas Roy of R.K. Mission Hospital, Kolkata were invited speakers.

Symposium on “Cervical Cancer Control in India”
The Symposium was organized to review the strategies for Cervical cancer control in India. It was attended by nearly 200 scientists, oncologists, health providers and representatives of industries to discuss cervical cancer prevention in India. The key note address at this Symposium was delivered by Prof. Harald zur Hausen, Nobel laureate in Medicine, 2008. The One-day Symposium was the first of its kind where all those currently working in cervical cancer control presented their work. A panel discussion on Cervical Cancer Control-What next concluded the day-long programme. An added attraction was a Poster Session from young researchers working in Kolkata on Cervical Cancer.
