Foundation lectures


Cancer Foundation of India
started a series of Foundation Lectures to invite internationally renowned speakers who have contributed to the field of cancer research, treatment and prevention of cancer. The Biennial lecture series has been conceived as an important landmark on the cancer control calendar in India which will be followed or preceded by a National Symposium/Seminar/Conference on the specialized field of the speaker. Although CFI was launched on November 7, 2002, the date of Foundation Lecture has been kept flexible to the convenience of the speaker.

Speaker: Prof. Amartya Sen, of Harvard University, USA, & Nobel Laureate in Economics, 1998

Topic: “Cancer in India: How serious a Challenge”

Venue: National Library Auditorium, Kolkata

The Second CFI Foundation Lecture was delivered by Professor Amartya Sen, of Harvard University, USA, Nobel Laureate in Economics, 1998, on January 2, 2012 in Kolkata. Prof. Sen, is one of the most celebrated and revered economist, academician, philosopher and writer of our time. A cancer survivor himself,  he is now leading a global campaign against tobacco use. This was the first time that Prof. Sen spoke on cancer and propounded the theory of Social Epidemiology of Cancer.

Speaker: Prof. Harald zur Hausen, DKFZ, Heidelberg, Germany & Nobel Laureate in Medicine, 2008

Topic:The search for infectious agents in human cancers: a continuous challenge”

Venue: National Library Auditorium, Kolkata

The First Foundation Lecture was delivered by Professor Herald zur Hausen, of DKFZ, Heidelberg, Germany, Nobel Laureate in Medicine, 2008, on December 3rd, 2009 in Kolkata. It may be noted that it was Prof zur Hausen’s first visit to India after receiving the Nobel Prize. The Foundation lecture was attended by more than 500 people representing Kolkata's civil society scientists, medical practitioners, and eminent cervical cancer specialists who had specially come to attend the “Symposium on Cervical Cancer Control in India” organised by CFI the following day.
